Colchicine-Induced Polyploids from Cell Suspension Cultures of Sugarcane1

Don J Heinz and Grace W. P. Mee2

A high percentage of endoreduplicated chromosomes resulted when cell suspension cultures of sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) were treated with colchicine. Cytological examination of 46 plants from H 57-1627 callus differentiated from the colchicine-treated cells showed 22 to be polyploids, 2 to be mixoploids, and 22 to be diploids. This is the first report of chromosome doubling in commercial sugarcane hybrids. The proposed method of treating cells in suspension with colchicine should prove beneficial to sugarcane breeders and other breeders interested in obtaining polyploid plants.
