Considerable variation in seed production potentials was shown by polyeross progenies of selected clones of smooth bromegrass, Bromus inermis Leyss. Synthetics formed of clones with superior progenies yielded 30 to 40% more seed than northern common in regional tests. Seed volume weight was higher for synthetics than for northern common or standard varieties. Composites formed from reserve polycross seed produced less seed than synthetics, but were of predictive value for synthetic performance. Significant correlations of parent clones and polycross progenies for seed yield and seed quality suggested mass selection for initial improvement. High seed yields of selected clones were associated with a reduction in aneuploidy. No adverse effects on forage production resulted from selection for seed productivity.
