Hill versus Row Plot for Testing Wheat Lines1

Parents and 107 F4 lines derived from three wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell) crosses were tested in hills and rows in 1967 and 1968. Comparisons of hill plot vs. row plot using means, ranges, mean squares, heritabilities, and correlations indicated that both techniques were equally efficient to discriminate among the wheat lines for heading date, plant height, seed weight, but not for yield.

The number of entries that were common in the extreme 25% portion of the population using each method appeared quite satisfactory to justify the use of hill plots for testing large populations.
