Genetic Diversity and Heterosis in Nicotiana. III. Crosses among Tobacco Introductions and Flue-Cured Varieties1

Crosses of flue-cured varieties of Nicotiana tabacum L. to introductions of N. tabacum from South and Central American countries in the presumed center of origin of the species were evaluated at two locations in North Carolina. Heterosis in these crosses for most characters was greater than that found in crosses among flue-cured varieties, was similar to that found for crosses of flue-cured varieties to Oriental varieties, but considerably less than that obtained from crossing flue-cured varieties to the presumed progenitor species. Diallel analyses of the data detected considerable general combining ability x location interaction effects, significant variance of general combining ability for all characters, and significant variance of specific combining ability for five of nine characters evaluated.
