Effect of Temperature on Self-fertility and In Vitro Pollen Growth Characteristics of Selected Alfalfa Clones1

Charles Straley and Bill Melton2

Eight alfalfa clones, Medicago sativa L., were evaluated for self-fertility and pollen growth characteristics under four temperature regimes (16, 21, 27, and 32 C). Highly significant differences were found among clones and among temperatures. Highly significant clone x temperature interactions were found for self-fertility, in vitro pollen germination, and in vitro pollen tube elongation. Pollen germination and tube elongation were not correlated with self-fertility with one exception, self-fertility and pollen germination at 16 C.

Key Words: Genotype x temperature
