A device was constructed to provide continuous temperature gradients with a –40 C minimum temperature. A technique is described to determine the killing temperature of plants. Winter wheat and barley seedlings grown in the natural environment and in controlled environmental chambers were used to illustrate the application of this device for freezing plants and the technique for determining their level of hardiness.
