A Possible Source of Cytoplasmic Male Sterility in Intermediate Wheat-Grass, Agropyron Intermedium (Host) Beauv1

Jurgen Schulz-Schaeffer2

Amphidiploid Triticum durum Desf. x Agropyron intermedium (Host) Beauv. and T. durum x A. trichophorum (Link) Richt. hybrids were backcrossed twice A. intermedium and A. trichophorum. A pronounced increase in male sterility was observed in the series from the amphidiploid (AD) to the first and second substitution backcross generations (SB1 and SB2). Male sterility estimates averaged 53.4% in the AD, 83.6% in the SB1 and 96.8% in the SB2. Approximately 69% of all SB2 plants were 99 to 100% male sterile.

Key Words: Triticum x Agropyron amphidiploids • Hybrid wheatgrass • Substitution backcross • Intergeneric hybrid
