Backcross-derived sublines of inbred B14, differing by single marker genes and chromosome segments linked to these gene loci, were used in an analysis of the types of gene action in the inheritance of nine quantitative plant and ear characters. Three genes, Rpd1, Rf1, and Wx, and their recessive alleles were used to give the 27 genotypes for all combinations of the homozygous and heterozygous genotypes at the three loci. Highly significant differences were observed for all characters measured. Frequencies of significant comparison(P < .05) for the types of gene action were: additive, 63%; dominance, 37%; additive x additive, 44%; dominant x dominant, 56%; additive x dominant, 20%; additive x additive x additive, 22%; additive x additive x dominant, 18%; additive x dominant x dominant, 37%; and dominant x dominant x dominant, 0%. Effects were greater for the rp1 and rf1 loci than for the wx locus. Overdominance was observed at two loci for yield and at one locus for each of ear row and ear length.
