In a balanced set of comparisons, 36 single, three-way, and double crosses, involving nine unrelated inbred lines of corn, Zea mays L., were evaluated for grain yield. Data were also obtained on the variety x environment interaction patterns for the three types of crosses. Average yield of singles was 3.1 q/ha greater than that for three-ways, and the average for three-ways was 1.7 q/ha greater than doubles. The range in yields for singles was 12.7 q/ha more than for three-ways, and 24.2 q/ha greater than for doubles. Hybrids x environments mean square for singles was more than twice that for doubles, and the mean square for three-ways was intermediate between that for doubles and singles.
