Field Emergence and Growth of Crested Wheatgrass From Pretreated vs Nontreated Seeds1

Seeds of ‘Nordan’ crested wheatgrass, Agropyron desertorum (Fisch. ex Link) Schult., grown in 1965 were kept wet, but not submerged, for 50 hours at 17.2 C, dried for 2 days, and subsequently planted. Thirteen plantings, made between May 9 and June 6, were under conditions generally favorable for seedling emergence and growth. Nontreated seeds produced an average of 61.9 seedlings per 100 seeds planted while treated seeds gave 68. These plantings, harvested August 15, yielded an average of 45 g dry weight per 100 seeds planted from nontreated seeds and 51.5 g from treated seeds. Six additional plantings were made June 19 to July 20, under generally much less favorable conditions. Twenty eight to 39 days after planting, nontreated seeds produced an average of 22.1 seedlings per 100 seeds planted, while treated seeds gave 30.8. The advantage of preplanting seed treatment was enhanced as conditions favoring emergence deteriorated.
